“We persist because even poppies/pansies break through the pavement.”

A love letter from the Gaysians of the Bay to the TLGB+ Black people across the South.

Comrade Lover began as a lion dancing collective oriented around art, love and justice. So named after “Comrade Lover”, a term for an LGBTQ+ person across many sinophone communities, LGBTQ+ Asian Americans across the Bay Area drum and dance at political actions, celebrations, and festivals to scare away the evil spirits of colonialism, imperialism, racism, transphobia and injustice.

Inspired by tattoo artist Cedre Csillagi’s quest to ink a thousand pansies in support of the Knights and Orchid (TKO) Society in Alabama—the first and only AIDS Service Organization and STD/STI clinic in the state, led by Black Trans and LGBQ people. TKO builds the power of TLGB+ Black people across the South by providing a spectrum of health and wellness services.

Members of Comrade Lover came together to create a song meant to be a love letter from the queer/trans Asian community in California to the TLGB+ Black community in the South.

As trans rights continue to be attacked, Comrade Lover sings:

“We’re right here, right by your side
Promise for a future shared
Broken chains, all up the wall
Spread your wings, don’t fear”
